KC Stadium

Siting a new super-stadium within a Victorian park, including tree survey and arboricultural advice.

Hull City Council asked their Design Team to create a modern football stadium within the historic landscape of West Park. To accommodate such a massive development within the park threatened to change the character. We were challenged to work on the Masterplan and create a soft approach to the new stadium.

Masterplanning of Hull’s West Park involved working with Kingston upon Hull City Council, the new Hull Superstadium Design Team, and in parallel developing a total refurbishment scheme for the historic park with Kingston upon Hull Parks Department. This includes requirements arising from community consultation.

West Park dates from 1850, and many of the old trees are over 100 years old. Weddles approach was to locate the stadium away from the public view, hidden behind the trees, but with a strong diagonal axis giving direct views from an important traffic junction.

Weddles also recommended creating a new tree structure for the park, and relocated the very popular aviaries to a more tranquil location, away from the busy football crowds.

West Park now buzzes with activity 24 hours each day, with a new College located in the stadium, a Leisure Centre and skatepark, new children’s playground and a wildlife and ecology park.

Weddles work included creating a new habitat for a colony of protected lizards, and clearing an invasive growth of Giant Hogweed which threatened local wildlife.

Successfully building new sports facilities within a much loved historic park needed a gentle touch ensuring that the wildlife, heritage landscape and park users’ interests were safeguarded and enhanced by the new landscape design.

Sefton Palm House

The local community of Liverpool had watched this magnificent Victorian building crumble into disrepair, and so they formed a group of ‘friends’ to persuade the city council to apply for a Restoration Grant.

Weddle Landscape Design were appointed to provide technical expertise. assist with the grant advise, the engineers on environmental requirements, and to ensure that the scheme was a horticultural success. Indoor plant displays are very popular, especially during the winter months. It gives people an opportunity to see exotic plants from across the world without having to travel. Current green thinking is that such displays should be low carbon, low energy and no chemicals.

Weddles recommended an economical heating system to provide sufficient background heat for a range of warm temperate plants. We showed the city council that it would be possible to reuse many plants held in their botanic collection without needing to Import new tropical plants. The planting design gives visually exciting display and Is maintained by biological control.

The restored Palm House is a famous destination for visitors to Liverpool and a venue for civic and social events such as weddings, concerts and exhibitions

The Pearl

Pearl is a major insurance company which wanted to move from its London offices to a new headquarters building in Peterborough Busness Park, close to open countryside. Pearl wanted to ensure that employees would benefit from the green setting and asked Weddle Landscape Design to join the Design Team.

Roof gardens are technically demanding, requiring irrigation, drainage, and have special problems of shallow lightweight soils needing special tree anchorage.Inside the building are huge aria, with collections of tropical plants which can be seen from office workspaces.

The Pearl Centre landscape scheme was a complete success and welcomed Pearls employees to their new workplace. At lunchtimes staff can enjoy strolling and sitting in a wide choice of different landscape gardens, and fishing in the lake.

Stocksbridge Engineering Steels

The company was formed in 1986 by privatisation during a severe recession in the steel industry. Its business is entirely based on scrap steel. The industrial use of the site started in the 19th century, is 3.3 km by 0.4 km and dominates the valley where it is located.

Pollution abatement measures have resulted in reduction in atmospheric and river pollution going beyond statutory requirements, and have led to significant savings of energy Some 100, 000 trees will have been planted by 1991 and wild flower meadows created in the grounds, encouraging the return of wildlife, especially birds. The company has provided amenities for local residents, including a public footpath with viewing and information points to link the grounds with other public and private woodlands.

The concept of joint responsibility for the environment has now spread beyond the company’s site, with joint participation (local authority, the company and the Countryside Commission) in environmental improvements in the town of Stocksbridge. The project was awarded the European Commission 1991 European Better Environment Award.
