Sheffield Winter Gardens

Sheffield Winter Gardens

The Winter Garden is a spectacular glazed public space in the heart of the Sheffield city centre. Extensively landscaped with exotic trees and plants it is an indoor park providing an important amenity for the public in the city centre and a counterpoint to the open air ‘summer’ Peace Gardens nearby. Along the length of the building three garden areas have been formed and gently ramped paths rise through the planted beds to provide an alternative ‘wild’ route through the building.

Weddles provided the horticultural design for this landmark public glasshouse, with a service including specification, plant sourcing, supervision.

The majority of the trees and plants are from the southern hemisphere, where they have evolved quite differently to Britain’s own native flora, and are strikingly exotic and unusual In their forms, textures and colours. The beds contain over 2,500 plants from a wide diversity of 150 different species. The largest trees are over 10 metres tall with the potential to grow taller than the building.

The Winter Garden has been a great success for Sheffield and is loved by the people. It has become a famous local building and an icon for the city, and appears almost daily in the local newspaper with pictures of visiting celebrities or civic events. It has also helped stimulate regeneration of new commercial developments nearby, including high quality offices, restaurants, hotels and apartments, making the Heart of the City a truly special place.

Kettlebridge Doorstep Green

This local Doorstep Green project was funded under the Big Lottery Fund’s predecessor the ‘New Opportunities Fund’. The aim of the doorstep green scheme was to find green spaces which could be organised into relatively small parks and then create a local charitable trust to own, fundraise for, and run each space in perpetuity.

Weddles worked extensively with Kettlebridge Action Group and the local community to understand their requirements and aspirations. The design is a colourful inviting community space with seating, ball games walls, an informal play area, events space and footpaths giving opportunities for play, rest and community involvement. Indeed our aims were to give the local children ‘ownership’ of the park by getting them involved with planting bulbs, painting murals and building mosaics.

Kaifeng Design Expo

The painting ‘Ascending the river at Qingming Festival’ is used as the fundamental concept. The landmark building on site will house the 3D animated version of this painting, previously displayed at the 2010 world expo, and is expected to draw in huge crowds to the city. Our concept will help local people easily read the cultural meaning of the landscape design. Consequently, this could result in enhancing the cultural value of the scheme, and highlighting the character of Song Dynasty culture which is ‘High Quality and Elegance’.

The concepts of ‘ecological design ‘and ‘design for health’ are also integrated into the landscape. The scheme is aimed as to be a best practice example of roof gardens and spaces for people of all ages.

Central to the design is the large ‘River’ sculpture located along south-east boundary, within pedestrian walk along main roads. It is 160m in length and varies from 6m to 9m. The concept of this giant landscape feature is to abstracti the shape of the river from the painting ‘Ascending the river at Qingming Festival’, and raise it into the air and then turn it vertical to facing the street.

The ‘river’ is supported by steel lighting columns, and arranged in a de-constructing format to create interesting visual rhythm . The water wave lines are pre-curved steel column sections installed on site. The sculpture has been carefully designed to avoid blocking views to the top end retail shops.
